Bristol Fire Department Internship Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

The Bristol Fire Department, Resident Student internship, is an independent educational program that operates in cooperation with the New Hampshire Community Technical College in Laconia New Hampshire.  The purpose of the program is to provide a two year field experience that prepares students for careers in the Fire Service by exposing them to the principals of firefighting, EMS, Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

The Program is designed for mature, motivated students who seek to augment their academic commitment by participating in a supervised program that provides actual job experience. The internship goes well beyond observation and job shadowing and requires active participation as a firefighter/EMT in a working combination fire department.

Students are assigned to shifts that will compliment the NHCTC academic schedule and allow for adequate study time. Students quickly learn how to balance their classes, homework and internship responsibilities through a process of planning and communications with supervisors and mentors.

Resident Students live at the Bristol Fire Station in assigned student quarters. Working along side career and call firefighters, students are exposed to the fire service culture and the community we serve.

EXPECTATIONS

Students are expected to work on shift, sixteen hours per week. In addition to the scheduled shift work, students also respond to calls whenever they are at the station and in accordance with academic requirements. Students are expected to participate in a positive and professional manner at all times. The department holds one meeting on the first Tuesday of each month, Fire Training on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month and EMS continuing education on the third Tuesday of each month. Students are required to attend all four meetings. Students are eligible for call pay based on an hourly rate for meetings, trainings and emergencies responded to. Students selected for the program are required to sign an agreement for 24 months that demonstrates a mutual understanding of the program requirements.
